The Freetown Agenda for Action on Women’s Entrepreneurship in Tourism was launched on Thursday, November 28, 2019, in Freetown, Sierra Leone. The event was sponsored by The World Bank Group’s We-Fi (Women Entrepreneurs Finance Initiative), in collaboration with UNWTO and Ministry of Tourism & Cultural Affairs, Sierra Leone

The objectives are as follows:

  • present the findings of the UNWTO Global Report on Women in Tourism (Second Edition) and the 2019 Women in Tourism Enterprise Survey in Ghana and Sierra Leone (WeTour)
  • discuss and identify key policy recommendations to promote women’s empowerment through tourism entrepreneurship” (Freetown Forum Event Program, 2019)

Dr Louise Twining-Ward of the World Bank Group noted in her opening remarks, “though women dominate  the tourism sector, there is an achievement gap.” This will change. The forum provided the right avenue, motivation and incentive for CHANGE.

The full-day activities included panel discussions (global report on women and Tourism, 2019; tourism entrepreneurship on Sierra Leone, Women, Business and the Law), interactive sessions (access to finance, networks and digital technology; legal rights, gender-based violence) and networking session. Vibrant deliberations focusing on overcoming the barriers to women’s entrepreneurship in tourism and lively debates on creating the business environment for women to succeed in tourism were key highlights of the event. According to Dr Ogechi Adeola of the Lagos Business School,  a Panellist at the event, “the epoch-making event can best be described as insightful, resourceful and action-packed”.

The Freetown Forum was truly a true celebration of women’s empowerment through Tourism Entrepreneurship. The event ended with the Collective Adoption of the Freetown Action Plan for Women’s Empowerment through Tourism, anchored by Dr Memunatu Pratt, Hon Minister of Tourism and Cultural Affairs, Sierra Leone.
